Tervita Sponsors Kelly Sutherland With Highest Bid in Calgary Stampede Canvas Auction History

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 29, 2012) - In a record-setting evening at the Calgary Stampede's annual Canvas Auction today, Tervita Corporation landed the right to sponsor legendary chuckwagon driver Kelly Sutherland at the 2012 GMC Rangeland Derby, with the highest bid in Calgary Stampede history.

"This year is filled with milestones, both for Tervita and for the centennial year celebration of the Calgary Stampede. We recently celebrated our 25th year with the integration of more than 13 business units under the Tervita brand and we're thrilled to put that new name on Mr. Sutherland's chuckwagon canvas," said John Gibson, Tervita president and chief executive officer.

Tervita bid $300,000 for the honour of sponsoring the iconic chuckwagon driver.

Sutherland is a world-reigning chuckwagon driver with more than 100 major awards and championships to his name throughout his 40-year career. He has won practically every major event in chuckwagon racing history, including a record 12 Calgary Stampede GMC Rangeland Derby victories.

"There are many parallels between Tervita and Mr. Sutherland, which makes this a perfect match," said Gibson. "Tervita's operations span North America and our employees live and work in many rural areas. We have a strong connection to our rural roots and our history, so this is a natural extension of our commitment and desire to give back to our communities."

"I'm ecstatic that our chuckwagon received the highest bid in Calgary Stampede history," said Sutherland. "I think it's symbolic of what a huge year this is for the Stampede, for Tervita and for me as a chuckwagon driver. Tervita is an incredible partner to have, especially considering our shared values of safety, excellence and collaboration. I look forward to making Tervita and my community proud in this year's chuckwagon races."
